What are Designer Radiators?

Article written by Richard Austin, 14th Jan 2009

Although it is generally believed that radiators are one of the few household or office fixtures capable of offering little or nothing to an aesthetic living space, the reality these days is actually quite different. For while conventional radiators are still very much the norm in most houses, a range of so-called designer radiators has emerged over the last few years and grown in stature and prominence to the extent that its existence should no longer be overlooked. Before giving a broad overview of what designer radiators are, it is perhaps best to start by clarifying the term. Basically, the term refers to a range of heating appliances whose outward appearance bears little or no resemblance to what most people would consider as conventional or standard radiators. Appearances vary enormously, but in general can be characterised as modern or futuristic, beautiful, stylish, daring or different. Some of the larger items have also been described as stunning or breathtaking, while smaller items such as bathroom towel rails are often thought of as innovative and desirable.

The above point is important since the word designer is apt to cause confusion in the context of radiators. While other designer goods such as perfumes and handbags are essentially value-added products that bear the names of well known fashion houses, designer radiators are at present designed and manufactured exclusively by reputable engineering firms with no ties to the fashion industry. All of this, however, may change in the future. Generally speaking, designer radiators can be classified as either or wall-mounted or freestanding. The first category offers significant variation in terms of size and design, and encompasses units suitable for both bathroom use and installation in living spaces such as bedrooms, studies, and living rooms. Tubular designs constructed from stainless steel are common, as are large flat panels featuring colorful geometric patterns. Smaller units intended for bathrooms include heated towel rails and futuristic-looking wall heaters. Freestanding units are just as varied, unusual and modern. Ceiling-high fixtures constructed in the shape of spirals are an especially striking example of this type. Finishes vary enormously. Stainless steel is popular, as is chrome. Colorful designs are also available: artistic montages of pinks, reds and oranges are often employed as a means not only of distinguishing these radiators from their non-designer counterparts, but also to disguise their underlying functionality. Indeed, many wall-mounted units bear more resemblance to a work of modern art than to the popular conception of a traditional radiator. Several manufacturers have made their mark in this genre. An exhaustive list is obviously beyond the scope of this article, but well known brands include Aeon, Bisque, MHS, SBH, and The Radiator Company. A quick search on Google will reveal more. As with any other large or expensive household item, great care and forethought should be exercised prior to purchase. The best solution is almost always to visit a reputable showroom, but failing this there are a number of online outlets with considerable experience and expertise in this field.
